The 1949-S mint state Franklin half dollar is one of the toughest issues in the series to find with full bell lines. Franklins struck at the San Francisco mint are the softest struck coins in the Franklin series. Locating examples with full bell lines can be an extremely frustrating task in any grade. Only five dates in the Franklin series were struck at the San Francisco mint and all are extremely tough to locate with full bell lines. Out of the five issues the rarest date to find with full bell lines is the 1953-S.

The 1949-S Franklin half dollar is extremely tough to find with attractive color in any grade. They are also really tough to find with attractive eye-appeal. If you look at NGC's population tables you will see how very few examples are certified with their star designation. Not only grade but eye-appeal plays a huge role in how rare a Franklin half dollar is. The better the eye-appeal the higher the premium.
